VFG Parade: In The Clutch

If you've been following fashion trends for Fall 2007, then you know clutch purses are HOT! Designers have been showing large envelope bags for day and small glamorous clutches for evening. Jump onto the Style Train with these offerings from our members!

This fab 1950's ethnic-inspired one (pictured left) by Tina from Lisit Vintage Cafe is just divine. And this fun orange-but-not-too-orange longer version (pictured right) from glamoursurf is perfect for transition from Summer into Fall.

Clutch Purses

When women hold on to keeping themselves abreast with the latest purse trend, one would never fail to spot clutch purses on their hands. Amazingly these purses, which became popular since the younger years of our grandmothers, seemed to have also held on to the fashion industry's changing times as we see it dominate the shelves in a more modern and dandier look.

Clutch purses first became a hot fashion craze during the early 1800's. It was inspired by reticules that sophisticated women popularly carry that time. Reticules are drawstring mini handbags of the early 18th century. Usually made of net or richly designed woven brocade fabric, reticules mostly contain traveling essentials such as a handkerchief, smelling salts, which is sniffed to relieve dizziness and headache, and a packet of rice papers used to wipe oily spots on the face. In fact, reticules are also considered as one of the forerunners of today's handbags.

When 19th century opened, the purse went out of style. Surprisingly, clutch purses became popular again during the second World War years. Reflecting the condition of the war times, the purse became smaller since raw materials to manufacture it were scarce and almost inaccessible.

Clutch purses are named after how it is being carried. Clutch means to grasp or hold with the hand. And true to its name the small purse, which classically has no handles or straps, is always enveloped in the hands of women.

A classic clutch purse is rectangular in shape with frame closure. The fashion market today made the purse more stylish, modern and more innovative. Detachable chain or adjustable leather straps were added so the mini purse can be carried on the shoulder or on the wrist.

From rectangular, clutch purses on oval, round, triangle, square box and heart shapes are now displayed on fashion windows. No longer limited to brocade material, the purses are now more voguish with its satin or silk body are being designed with beads, sequins, rhinestones, and crystals giving a more feminine flair.

With the wide variety the fashion market offers, it is sometimes hard to make a satisfying choice. Here are other elegant and popular styles that could guide you in choosing the right clutch purse for that romantic evening affair.

Antique Frame Purses. Distinguished with its silver or gold frame closure, this purse is attractively trendy. It is also one of the most secure in the lines of clutch purses, which are often designed with shimmering sequins and colorful bead crystals.

Envelope Purses. Shaped like a long slender envelope, this purse is also stunningly sophisticated satin material, which is also embellished or covered with shining sequins or beads. You can secure your essentials here with its snap closure and since it lacks straps or handles one can gracefully carry it either in hand or under the arm.

Wrist Purses. This purse is a perfect example of strapped or chained clutch purse. Most of wrist purses are cylindrical in shape with a soft drawstring chain or leather handle that, of course, designed to fit fragile wrist of women.

Although with its very small size, where one can hardly put everything, women still find the purse elegant. In fact, clutch purses are one of the most perfect picks for evening bags. A gold clutch purse, for instance, is a complementing match for that regal black velvet evening gown. There are some bigger in size styles that allow one to carry more everyday essentials like slim cellular phone, a lipstick, or perhaps a mini mirror.

Through time, clutch purses have truly proven that there are great wonders in small things.

Prints, Please

70's City-scape print dress from fast_eddies_retro_rags

In the mood for some funky prints? Seems everyone is! Prints are a hot trend this year.

After a very dark fall season, prints are making a comeback in a big way. Three you'll see this upcoming season are: 70s style, animal and floral. Rebecca Taylor is known for her “cool girl” designs and this season was no exception. I love her printed top and 70s style jean. And there is nothing sexier than an animal print done right.

Florals range this season from 60s mod to sophisticated and refined. All of these prints are appropriate for any age group. What's important is that the print should match the stature of the woman. Very petite woman will look dwarfed by an oversized print and woman with a bigger frame can dwarf a print if it's too small or cutesy. Look for styles that play up the shape of your body to use prints to their best advantage.

Also, if prints scare you, start small. Do a printed accessory like a scarf or a shoe or bag and slowly work in separate pieces first, like a blouse or skirt and then take the plunge into dresses or printed coats.

Spring Into Fashion

Spring into fashion

By Casey Gillis

When you hit stores this season to update your spring and summer wardrobes, don’t be surprised to feel caught up in a time warp.

“Vintage fashion is getting more and more popular, especially as the fashion designers are going more retro,” said fashionista Nicole, who writes for the Web site Fashioniq.com (she doesn’t reveal her last name).

As designers go mod, you’ll start to see more designs straight outta your mother’s closet - think minidresses, bold colors and crazy geometric patterns.

“Edie Sedgwick is back,” Stacy London, co-host of TLC’s “What Not To Wear,” recently told USA Today Weekend. “So you’ll see ’60s sack dresses that fit in the shoulder, but are sacky through the rest of it. You’ll see ’70s caftan dresses, which have a lot of volume. And you’ll see gold lame leggings, which are very ’80s yet futuristic.”

And prints - florals, stripes, polka dots, graphics and those aforementioned geometrics - will be big.

“It’s really fun,” Clinton Kelly, London’s co-host, said in the USA Today Weekend article. “They’ve sort of blurred the lines between geometrics and florals in a lot of cases. But be careful: if you’re petite and you go for an oversize print, they walk into the room before you do, and that’s the last thing we want. Proportion is everything.”

While each print will be beautiful on its own, the first exit to a fashion disaster would be to pair them up.

“Never mix two prints,” Laurie Brookins, senior fashion editor at Ocean Drive and Vegas magazines, recently told USA Today. “Pair a solid with a geometric in whatever color works with the print.”

Everything is trending more toward a feminine look, as well.

“Last spring, it was all about gold,” Nicole said. “It was very ritzy and glitzy. This year, it’s more feminine. It’s more like country club style rather than jetting off to Monte Carlo.”

Color me fashionable

Bold, bright primary colors will be on the palette this spring and summer.

“Things come back in fashion every 10 or 20 years,” Nicole said. “It’s spring, so everybody wants to see color. They’re putting away the dark navies and bringing out the pinks and greens.”

Plus, “anything yellow is really wonderful right now, especially for evening,” she said, adding that stars like Drew Barrymore and Kerry Washington have chosen the hue for several recent events.

But if you go with yellow, choose a soft, feminine color - “and not the ugly mustard yellow,” Kelly cautioned.

London said we’d also see lots of black, white and red - like Dara’s black and white polka dotted dress with red accents in the photo.

“You’ll see a lot of white and cream and nude,” London added. “And a lot of neon color, too. We recommend you do that in very small doses. Stick to neon or bright accessories rather than dress head to toe in one of those colors.”

On MSN’s Shopping Web site, style editor Shannon McCarthy recently recommended wearing these colors as separates, like “a stand-out, bright leather jacket with your favorite jeans, or the finishing touch of a red belt with that blue and white nautical-inspired outfit.”

Shine on

Looking for the perfect accessories to spice up an outfit?

Think metallic: silver, copper, bronze, gold.

These tints will be popular in everything from shoes to clutches to jewelry.

Plus, “we’re seeing lots of sheer overlays,” London said. “Many have a metallic tint to them and are over florals. It’s a new way to make clothing slightly more interesting.”

When it comes to accessorizing, bangles are going to be a hot item.

“Tons of them,” Nicole said. “People are pretty much lining them halfway down their arm.”

USA Today recently reported that delicate jewelry is out, and in its place will be chunky, dramatic pieces.

“Everything was so minimalist (for the longest time), it seemed almost vulgar to have stones,” Alison Burwell, jewelry news editor for W magazine, told the newspaper.

But after seeing so many starlets on the red carpet embrace their inner divas, it’s “given women the confidence to try bolder looks.”

When it comes to footwear, flats - especially those with a little bit of ornamentation on them, Nicole said - are still going to be a sought-after item.

But sandals will also get in on the action, whether they be wedges in the season’s trendy metallic and patent leather or gladiator sandals (as long as you keep the straps at or below the ankle so the shoes are versatile enough to pair with different lengths of shorts or skirts, Syle.com executive editor Nicole Phelps recently told USA Today).

The long and short of it

When it comes to skirt and dress lengths, Nicole said there isn’t one particular trend as there has been in seasons past.

“This season you can have anything as long as it’s in a beautiful color, and it will be perfect,” she said.

London and Kelly made a similar sentiment in the USA Today Weekend article.

“Spring is a little bit of a retrospective of the ages,” London said. “You’ll see ’40s-style high-waisted pencil skirts and really high-waisted denim. Now they’re also doing high-waisted denim in skinny jeans, which is as hard to wear as any low-rise jean you ever ran away from in the first place.”

Another USA Today story reported that short-sleeve jackets and coats with a bracelet sleeve would also be popular.

“It’s a little bit more practical,” Phelps of Style.com said. “You don’t have to worry about shirt cuffs awkwardly poking out at the arms.”

She added that it gives “a little bit of a feminine touch to the jacket. Everyone wants to feel a little bit girly when the sun comes out.”

Sleeves will also trend toward being ornamented, adorned and puffed - but “aim for a subtle puff at the shoulder,” Phelps said, “so it doesn’t seem too fashion victim-y.”

Doing It Maxi Style This Summer

It transpired at the end of last month that the ultra short lengths being touted since last winter by fashion 'directors' as the only way to wear your skirt or dress in summer 2007, aren't proving to be the only way to go in hemlines. Some may choose to go up, but others are going downwards in a blessed (for me certainly! I'm not exactly leggy you see) resurgence in popularity of the maxi or patio dress.

High street chain Miss Selfridge saw one version sell out in the first day, and other stores are seeing a similar trend in longer length sales. I suppose when offered as an alternative to trying to layer the ultra fashionable micro-mini over leggings in the mid summer heat it's bound to appeal to those that don't want to reveal all. But surely the best way to go is vintage - a few have certainly caught my eye whilst browsing my fellow VFG member's offerings.

This early Laura Ashley dress from vintage-a-peel.co.uk has been on my list of wants for a while now - and if you're quick this floaty patio dress(pictured) from cactusandcattails on ebay.com may still be up for grabs - very much the thing and with a matching wrap to boot! Or for those of you wishing to rock a psychedelic vibe how about this fab paisley number - a steal at under $30, from aVenir Fashions at Mainstreetmall.com? Lastly, you can't go wrong with Mr Beene, as this chiffon and polkadot affair at contentmentfarm.com goes a long way toward proving.

Of course there are plenty more out there, but I shan't give them all away. I may just go shopping myself in a minute..
