Etsy VFGteam Featured Seller

Welcome to our new VFG Blog series featuring members of the VFGteam at Etsy!
You will be introduced to a different Team member in each new post. Please check out our Team Gallery page here.

Today's featured seller is Deborah and you can visit her shop Big Yellow Taxi Vintage here.
She also sells as Soul Man Vintage where she specializes in men's vintage fashion.

1. When did you first get interested in vintage fashion & why?

An appreciation for vintage started as a character actor. It grew when I, essentially, inherited a mother lode of 60s clothing ten years ago. I had always been an avid thrift shopper though and would sometimes buy pieces just to admire not really knowing they were vintage at the time.

2. Do you regularly wear vintage?

I'm a jeans and t kinda gal most of the time, but I spice it up with vintage, especially jackets, sweaters, scarves and footwear. My favourite winter coat is a 1940s swing style that I pair with some funky 70s boots.

3. Do you have a Holy Grail?

More than one! On that list is a 60s Yves Saint Laurent Tribute to Tom Wesslemann Pop Art dress. I was fortunate to find an early 70s licensed copy once, but the hunt continues for the real deal.

4. If you could visit the atelier of any fashion designer (dead or alive), who would it be?

Vera Neuman.

5. What do you see as the future of vintage?

Fashion always borrows from the past. As one of my theatre professors once said "Nothing is ever truly original". Designer prices on the other hand break new ground each year. Vintage is a viable, affordable alternative. The message is growing and I see more and more people turning to vintage as their fashion choice.

6. What is your favorite item in your shop?

A fab Yves Saint Laurent tartan plaid suit for her at Big Yellow Taxi Vintage:

and a swanky 1950s silk jacquard scarf by Tooke for him at Soul Man Vintage:

Here are a few more items from Deborah's shop:
80s Kenzo Avant Garde Skirt

Nice interview. As much as I love vintage, I am also a jeans/skirt and T 'girl', but I use to wear lots of vintage years ago. Never was into designer labels, but love the photos they do their clothing. This is probably due to my study of fashion design in general, focusing on the fabrics and drape or cut of the design.

Oh my, I must of had a memory lapse. I do have two favorite designers, Alfred Shaheen, love tropical, growing up on the beaches of Southern California, and Bob Mackie who did all of Chers outfits for the Sonny and Cher Show. Diva and rock star heaven, once thought about designing for the concert stage.
